I’ve built multiple businesses from the ground up.
As a Cornell undergrad, I built RateDesi, a social media network that grew to 10 million visits a month. This was back in 2003—before AWS existed—when you had to host web servers on your own laptop :)
In 2010, I bootstrapped CouponDunia, which grew to 300 employees at its peak. In 2014, I sold CouponDunia to the Times Group, in one of India’s largest affiliate marketing deals.
More recently, we launched TopHire.co, a technical recruitment marketplace in India. So far, we’ve helped 900+ clients hire over 3000 tech professionals. This business continues to grow and I remain its CEO.
Along the way, the single most important realization I’ve had is the criticality of hiring the right leadership team. It’s the only way for a company to scale from 0 to 100 & beyond.
I’ve personally built technology, product, marketing, business and various other support teams from scratch—oftentimes leading these teams myself before delegating the function to a VP level hire. And, well, there’s a big difference between saying you’ve built those teams as a recruiter versus as a founder.
Ultimately, the responsibility of whether the business succeeds is thrust on the founders of the company and the team they put in place.
